Who
Who are the TMAGgots? The TMAGgots are a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation with the sole aim of connecting more young Tasmanians with arts, culture, history and science through the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. We hold 5 or 6 events per year which are based on exhibitions or happenings at the TMAG, and sometimes events outside of the TMAG. Anyone between 18 and 40(ish) years old is encouraged to join us for a few drinks and some hearty cultural gluttony.
What are the TMAGgots into?
The TMAGgots strive to achieve something quite broad and intangible - a sense of belonging for young people in their community and in the broader cultural environment in Hobart. We want people to feel invigorated by things that they experience at the TMAG, and inspired and informed by their TMAGgots encounters. We also seek to make a difference in whatever small way we can. Where ever possible we support young local artists and musicians through our events.
We try to print all TMAGgots materials on Australian made recycled paper. We have also formed partnerships with local arts organisations such as Edge Radio, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Camerata Tasmania, Loud Music, the Hobart Fringe Festival and the Tasmanian Theatre Company for selected events in order to continue to enhance the cultural experience for our members.
What's with the name?
We love a good pun and after all what is wrong with the maggot anyway? Maggots have been used medicinally since the 16th century as they are spectacularly good at cleaning wounds and leaving behind the healthy, fresh skin. It's called Maggot Therapy and coincidentally, it is said that as a maggot crawls over your skin it gives you a very gentle and therapeutic massage. We suggest that perhaps we are working a bit of our own Maggot Therapy at TMAG, by helping to eat away at the notions some people have that museums are disconnected from and not relevant to younger audiences. What we hope to achieve is to gradually reveal a fresher and stronger museum.
And have a bit of fun doing it...
